Vote PR BC pleased with clear process on proportional representation vote

VANCOUVER – Vote PR BC spokesperson Maria Dobrinskaya released the following statement on the announcement of the proportional representation rules by the attorney general:

“We welcome the announcement from Attorney General David Eby today about the upcoming referendum on proportional representation. We’re excited to have a clear process laid out, and look forward to speaking to voters across British Columbia about a new way of voting that works for everyone. Proportional representation means a government that’s more accountable to voters, and MLAs who put people ahead of party interests.”

“We’re pleased to see clear principles outlined that ensure local representation is protected and no region of the province will lose seats, and that there are measures in place to ensure that extremist parties can’t get elected. All three made-in-BC pro rep options outlined would strengthen our democracy, and put people ahead of the power brokers and backroom boys that have had undue influence in our current system for far too long.”

“Voters are going to have a choice this fall: we can choose our outdated status quo system in which a government with less than 40% of the vote can get 100% of the power. Or, we can join the majority of western democracies and move to a more fair system that puts people first.”
