I support proportional representation because it yields stable, long-term public policies. In contrast to first-past-the-post, Pro Rep voting systems do not throw out an entire administration to bring in a whole new one. As a result, advances in public policy are incremental and less polarizing.
Nick Loenen is a former Richmond Councillor and MLA, co-founder of Fair Voting B.C. and author of Citizenship and Democracy: A case for Proportional Representation.
He obtained his Masters Degree in political science from UBC in 1995. In 1997, Nick chaired the Reform Party of Canada’s Task Force on Electoral Reform. He formerly served on the national board of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and was sessional lecturer, Department of Political Science, UBC. Now in retirement, Nick loves sailing and wood working.
